SEXUAL HARASSMENT PREVENTION TRAINING

Given the increasing diversity found in today's workplaces, harassment prevention training has never been more integral to providing a respectful, comfortable workplace. And though employers are aware of the perils of sexual harassment, many are either unsure of what to do about it, or choose to ignore it.

California is the most recent state to enact laws not only requiring that employers provide harassment prevention training, but also mandating what the training must cover and how it is to be administered. Employers (particularly those not covered by such laws) are, unfortunately, more and more likely to find out the hard way that an ounce of prevention training is worth a pound of cure. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has reported that as part of settlements prior to litigation, employers paid $50 million in 2003.* (This is up from just $7.1 million in 1991.) Neither of these totals includes the vast sums of money paid out by employers on the losing side of harassment lawsuits that have gone to court.
